Twenty players have been named to the Canadian roster for the upcoming Cyprus Cup. There are two new faces who’ll make their senior debuts during the tournament.
Rachel Quon likely would’ve played by now if it wasn’t for an injury. The 22-year-old has professional experience as a member of the NWSL’s Chicago Red Stars. She also had a solid NCAA career with Stanford. Her international soccer experience came at the U-17 and U-20 levels as a member of those respective U.S. World Cup teams. She was called up by head coach John Herdman to be part of a friendly last June, but wasn’t unable to suit up because she didn’t have clearance from FIFA.
After going through the U-17 and U-20 Canadian programs, forward Nkem Ezurike will also make her senior debut. She is coming off a massive NCAA career. She was the face of women’s soccer during her tenure at the University of Michigan and shattered plenty of records in the process. She was also a first round pick of the NWSL’s Boston Breakers in this year’s draft, a first for any Canadian player.
The tournament begins on March 5th, when Canada faces Finland. The red and white are looking to win the title for the first time since 2011. They lost to England in the final last year and fell to France two years prior.
